Materuni Village is located on the northern part of Moshi town. It is the last village before Kilimanjaro national park and it is only 15 Km from Moshi town. You travel on both a tarmac and rough roads; there are a number of different options for transportation modes to reach Materuni.

Materuni Village Full Day Tour

Enjoy a full day village tour with English speaking guide. Immersion into village life including a visit to our local Materuni home. Upon arrival at the village office meet by our village guide register office then go to our briefing area, after briefing have a short walk to the waterfall approximately 40 minutes to the Materuni waterfalls.

On the way to the waterfall learn about village economy, agricultural and cultural life. Arrive at the waterfall pool, the waterfall is about 80 M high, please bring your swim costumes since there is a nice place to swim.

Come back to Mama Agnes’s’ home for chagga local food and coffee experience. Local food it is a typical chagga food and aside you will have rice/pilau prepared with a lot of fruits from the village. Experience the traditional coffee processing technique and participate in making organic Materuni coffee.

Enjoy with the chagga women since they normally sing while making coffee and finally watch a demonstration of the banana beer making process before sampling the local beverage.

Bring a swimsuit and towel and take a relaxing dip in the natural pool at the base of the Materuni falls. After the waterfalls hike we head to private coffe plantation owned by a local and will make delicious coffee brew from scratch! You will learn about traditional coffee processing techniques during the process there some local songs involved finally enjoy a cup of organic Materuni coffee.

Overnight Homestay Camping at Mama Agnes

Day 1:

Arrive at Materuni village, visit the 90m high Materuni waterfall and enjoy the spectacular view of the highest waterfall in the Moshi area, spend 30 minutes swimming at the natural pool. Return to Mama Agnes’s home for lunch and coffee experience with the family, Dinner and overnight camping at Mama Agnes’s camp site with views of the stunning Mt Kilimanjaro. Please bring swimwear, appropriate footwear, towels and outdoor wear.

Day 2: After breakfast, hike to Ngoma Adventure Waterfalls (approximately 2 hours) whilst enjoying the natural surrounding beauty. Walk back to the village for farewell celebration songs from the Materuni Traditional Dance Group.

Price of tour includes  a packed lunch, mineral water, village entry fee, camping equipment (mattress, tent,   included) please come with your own sleeping bag.

What to Bring on  Materuni Village Tours

Based upon our experience here are a few recommendations of what to pack for Materuni hikes:

  • Swim suit (if you are interested in swimming at the waterfalls)
  • Good walking shoes (you will be hiking up the slopes of the mountain)

 

  • Comfortable clothes for the trek (consider layers as the climate can change from cool to warm)
  • Jackets/Fleece for evenings, which can be cool at this altitude
  • Sunscreen & Insect repellent

 

  • Drinking water
  • Camera, film, batteries
  • Small TSH change or small gifts that are appreciated by local families during your visits into their homes.  Most families are quite poor and will be thankful for any offerings. This is optional, and not mandatory that you pay.
