Snorkelling in Coral Reefs on South East Zanzibar
Don’t leave Zanzibar without snorkelling – the turquoise blue waters invite any aqua-fanatics for some lovely exploration of tropical fishes and reefs!
There are two different snorkelling trips that I can offer you while you are on the South East Coast, the local snorkelling or Blue Lagoon. The local snorkelling takes you with a local fisher boat out towards the reef just off the South East coast beaches of Zanzibar – sailing across the out-of-this-world-blue waters until you reach the reef where you can enjoy as much snorkelling as you want to, enjoying the sight of tropical fish, reef and star fish.
Blue Lagoon leaves with a small boat right next to the famous The Rock restaurant – just a small boat ride to the snorkelling area where you will see a huge amount of tropical fish close up. This area is pretty much as good as the famous spots of Mnemba and Chumbe Island, just without the premium price tag.
Local Snorkelling with Ngalwa Boat
Local snoreklling with ngalwa is done from Jambiani, for $40 pick up from anywhere on the South East coast included, snorkelling equipment. Local fisher boat called ‘ngalawa’ (with outriggers, see the pictures that I submitted). Sailing across the water is just amazing!!
This snorkelling trip is tide dependent, so always necessary to check for high and low tide (which can be up to 4m difference on the South East coast of Zanzibar). Not huge amounts of fish, but starfish and corals can be seen. Fisher boats can also be organised for a sunset cruise along the coast line.
Price per person 40 USD, including pick up from anywhere on the South East coast, snorkelling equipment.
Blue Lagoon Snorkelling With Motorboat
Snorkelling on South East Zanzibar by small boat with motor, leaving right next to the famous The Rock restaurant. Only about 20mins ride, then snorkelling as long as they want. LOTS and LOTS of small tropical fish that come so close they might bite you.
Also tide dependent, low tide is usually better for sight. Trip can be combined with lunch or dinner at The Rock Restaurant. Everything is included – pick up from anywhere on the South East coast, boat rental, snorkeling equipment.
Price includes pick up from anywhere on the South East coast, snorkelling equipment.
I am Lau, a true Zanzibari, born and bred in Stone Town. I started working within the tourism industry a long time ago as dishwasher, but then I decided to study English and Tourism while I made the village of Jambiani my home. The beach, the sea and anything reggae- and football related is my life. Oh, and my little daughter, of course.
I love showing travelers the island of Zanzibar, particularly the South East coast where there are many things to do and see, like snorkeling with a local fisherboat, sunset BBQ on the beach, sandbank picnic with dolphins, village tour with Swahili cooking… Come and meet me!Lau is no more available.
Hello,
We are searching for a half day boat trip or full day.
We would like to avoid crowd and the classic safari Blue circuit. We would prefer Island hoping and focus on snorkeling in the good spot you know.
Do you think it’s possible to arrange such a boat trip for 2 people ?
Let me know the rates please
We are staying in Jambiani for The next 3 Days.
Kind Regards
Pauline Valon
Hi Pauline, if you are looking something more local and smaller, i took this snorkelling trip with Tamim, place for snorkelling is around 5 minutes from Paje, you can find him here https://safarijunkie.com/tanzania/zanzibar/snorkeling-with-dhow-in-blue-lagoon-on-zanzibar/, It is not that glamorous as commercial tours but I liked it anyway.
